“Oh, I know where we are…that’s where I had that buddha breakfast bowl and you had the homemade porridge mum. And then we went back later for coffee and cookies” exclaims my child, assertaining her bearings from a visit over 2 years ago. This coming from a child who forgets where dirty washing belongs at home!
#Fromwhereisit my family are far from being hoity-toity ‘foodies’. Rather, we are ‘foodaholics’, often preferring value-for-tastebud-sensation quantity over immaculatley crafted gourmet quality.
Normal people tend to recall significant experiences and adventures as landmarks of their holiday memories. We use meals, food outlets and ‘degree of food comas’ as a measure of the success of a particular holiday locale.
Today, our first day back in Bali in 2 years, has seen this family tradition garnished with a healthy dose of food.
We woke to the ‘included’ breakfast, which is always a questionable bonus as to whether the eggs will show us the sunny side or not. To our delight it was the best breakfast inclusion I’ve ever had (I’m not a fan of breakfast buffets as excessive food has a tendancy to ‘fall on my plate’).
Lunch was devoured at a beach warung on beanbags, with the Indonesian food staples of mie goreng, nasi goreng and satay ayam cooked in a makeshift kitchen. Of course, all washed down with fresh squeezed watermelon, mango and lime juice.
We then ventured to a vegan cafe (@alkalinebali) for lunch-dessert (yes, every meal is entitled to three courses), including my first cappucino made with coconut milk! My favourite was the raw choco- peanut butter slice but the zuchhini brownie with vanilla soy gelato was a close second.
Of course it is imperative we make room in our hectic food schedule for a coffee and snack for afternoon tea! Todays was a caramel tart.
We usually love hunting down every form of eatery during our holiday, from local street foods to hip cafes. Tonight for dinner we went completely rogue on our usual dining commandmemts and broke bread at our villas restaurant (@808residence @livingkitchenbali). In our defence, it is (an usually) reasonably priced healthy eating joint. We were also lured in by the kitchen aromas of fresh herbs and spices in some sort of curry concoction, wafting across the pool as we baked our own food babies.
Then comes the obligatory Bali dessert from the Quikee mart – an ice cream and numerous beng-beng chocolate bars.
Ok, so realistically #fromwhereisit I should be calling for volunteers to prepare an eating intervention for when I return home…please and thanks. For now though, cheers!
Anyone else live out their holidays gourmet-ly?
