I watch with admiration as my beautiful daughter emerges from her salty haven and shuffles up the beach. Her wet hair tousseled, surfboard effortlessly flung under her arm and the last light of the day framing her like she’s an oil painting on canvas. I can’t hide my proud smile.
Jasmine won the regional surf titles on the weekend, entitling her to progress to the state titles. I love watching her compete in surfing events, despite the agonising nerves I experience as the clock counts down and the waves play hide n seek.
It seems so silly to feel such intense nervousness for something completely out of my control. But, like any parent, I just want my child to be blessed with success.
So, I thought I would formulate a recipe for success that she can use to reach her goals.
1. Always preheat the oven first
Prepare yourself with simple steps of discipline NOW so when the heat is turned up, you are ready to rise to the occasion.
2. Be measured in your application
Too much or too little of any specific ingredient will impact the outcome. This goes for sugar too my dear…we know you have a penchant to overdo that one!
3. Don’t beat yourself up when all that is called for is a gentle knead
Learn to acknowledge what you did well and what you can improve upon.
4. Follow a recipe, but don’t be afraid to experiment
Be respectful and savvy by taking advice from those that have a LOT of experience and care deeply about your future (hmmmm, your dad). That doesn’t mean you can’t try it your own way, it just means take what works and use it wisely.
5. Have your cake and eat it too
Believe that you can have it all, and you will. Don’t settle. Go for what you want. Have fun. Make every opportunity delectable and devour every moment of success.
6. Stay hungry
If things feel stale, add some spice. Try approaching it from a different angle or remove yourself from the heat for a while and just let things simmer.
Success leaves you with a taste sensation like no other. Once you’ve had a little, it’s unappetizing to return to anything less. So, savour it.
Bon apetite my gorgeous girl!
